Brain Research UK: Q&A about the London Marathon Postponement

Will Brain Research UK have a team in the October 4th 2020 London Marathon?

YES! And we really hope that you will be able to make it. An October London Marathon has never happened before and not likely to again for a very long time, so this one will be a very special one. We hope all those who were planning to run in April 2020 can make it!

I have a Ballot place secured independently of the charity. What happens next?

The London Marathon have stated:

“Every runner with a place in the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon will be able to use their place in the rescheduled event on Sunday 4 October without any further payment.

All runners who have a place for the 2020 event and who choose not to take part (or are unable to do so) in the rescheduled event on Sunday 4 October will receive a refund of their 2020 entry fee or, if they wish, they may donate their 2020 entry fee to The London Marathon Charitable Trust.

Runners who do not take up one of the above options (with the exception of those who acquired their entry through a charity or sponsor) will be able to defer(rollover) their entry to the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon, scheduled for Sunday 25 April 2021, on payment of the entry fee for 2021, following the standard deferment process.”

We expect the London Marathon organisers to be in direct contact with you about your Ballot place, including anything you need to do to run in October 2020 or defer until April 2021. This process will be managed directly between you and the marathon organisers.

Please do let us know via email when you have decided whether you are running in October 2020 or April 2021 so that we can keep in touch with you.

I have a charity place given to me by Brain Research UK. What happens next?

The London Marathon have stated:

“Every runner with a place in the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon will be able to use their place in the rescheduled event on Sunday 4 October without any further payment.

If you are running on a Brain Research UK charity place in April 2020, you can use this on October 4th 2020. At present we do not know the organisers process whereby charity place runners confirm if they wish to run in October 2020. Please keep a look out for emails from the London Marathon organisers about how to confirm your place for October 2020. Once we have a clearer idea on this process we will be in touch.

Unlike Ballot places secured directly from the organisers, Brain Research UK charity place runners will not be able to automatically defer their charity place to April 2021. Any deferral requests for Brain Research UK charity place runners wanting to run in April 2021 will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

I had a charity place and pulled out of the 2020 London Marathon before the postponement was announced and would now like to run in October 2020.

If you had a Brain Research UK charity place and pulled out after February 1st 2020 then you will be offered a place in October 2020 as you remained on the organisers entry system. Please ensure you have confirmation from Brain Research UK if this affects you.

If you pulled out earlier than January 31st 2020 then you will not automatically be offered a place in the October marathon as you were removed from, or not added to, the organisers entry system. Please contact the Brain Research UK team directly for further information.

What happens to my sponsorship money?

We will move any sponsorship monies already received by Brain Research UK across to the marathon you take part in. To amend your Virgin Money Giving or Just Giving fundraising pages to show the correct event, please wait for instructions from the fundraising platforms themselves.

What do I do about training now?

Many will be wondering about howto adjust their training programme to suit a new marathon date. We expect the London Marathon to have plenty of tips and advice on this. We will also be in touch with our partners to work on some top training advice to help you.

Will you be holding any more Brain Research UK team events between now and October?

Yes, we will now look to hold a Brain Research UK team event before October 4th. It is likely this will not be announced for a little while – but we intend to find a way to get the team together before October 4th.

Will the Runner’s Show at ExCel still take place in the lead up to the October Marathon?

The organisers are waiting on venue confirmation. This is due to take place from the Wednesday-Saturday immediately before the October 4th Marathon. At present, all runners will need to attend in order to collect their running number. Brain Research UK will also be there to wish you good luck.

How do I apply for London Marathon 2021?

At the moment we are waiting on further details from the London Marathon organisers with their plans for April 2021 – currently they plan to open the Ballot no earlier than 1st July and no later than 4th October. Once this becomes clearer we will let you know. The organisers process and time frames will also determine how Brain Research UK handles its own process for taking applicants for its charity places for April 2021.

Is the Brain Research UK Office open at the moment?

Given the current Coronavirus situation we have reluctantly taken the decision to work from home until things improve. This will be reviewed as the situation develops.

As a result, we would kindly ask that if you have questions, to please email in the first instance. Whilst we do have a telephone number, this will be going to answer machine which we will keep checking on a regular basis.

We will be keeping the team abreast of news as and when it occurs, via both email and on our Facebook Group. At this stage, we are likely to be waiting on news like you!

We hope you understand if there is a little delay in responding to you during this time, but please know we are doing our best and grateful for all your support.
